Folgrim'll get yer by 1-Renaissance Folgrim'll get yer by 1-Renaissance
"Like a wolf, Folgrim was upon him with lightning speed. He seized the rat in a death hug, sinking his teeth deep into the vermin's throat. Shocked beyond belief, the other rat stood trembling a moment, then he dashed off wailing in terror. Folgrim lifted a bloodstained mouth from his prey's neck, calling, 'Run run run, ratty, I'll track ye down, Folgrim'll get yer.'"

-extracted from the Legend of Luke by Brian Jacques

Requested by :iconknightofaegis:

Everyone remembers Folgrim from the Legend of Luke, right? He's the son of Bargud, the nephew of Garraway Bullow, Warthorn and Riverwyte. And of course he's the brother of Skipper Tungro.

I know he looks crazy but with good reason.

Folgrim and his brother Tungro were Skippers of their holt. When a band of mixed vermin came, they fought them off. But Folgrim didn't think it was enough. Fierce warrior that he was, he pursued the vermin alone. Folgrim returned two seasons later starving, beaten, and with his mind ruined. The vermin had trapped him, starved and tortured him. After that, he was never the same.

Several times, his brother banished him from the holt because of his savage and strange ways. I mean the guy was eating rats and vermin. But Tungro always welcomed him back and forgave his ways.

Folgrim's story does have a happy ending by the way.

And in the background was my pathetic attempt at foliage. I tried to make Folgrim look kind of creepy, savage, and insane. Hoped it worked well. I almost feel sorry for the rat...almost.

As usual, Redwall (C) Brian Jacques

WOW, if Martin and his friends haven't found Folgrim and have him give up cannibalizing vermin, he would have also turned to woodlanders as well and would've become the wendigo of Mossflower! Good thing Martin and his friends found him and helped turn away from cannibalism.

Still though, I don't think eating rats and other vermin would be considered cannibalism. Would he have to eat only his species to commit that? Because that's how some animals do it today.

By the way, that's a bit gory scene in book even we don't literally see it. :o

Ooo.. :O
I did imagined how the Squirrels were already tore into bloody pieces and eaten by Foxes and Ermines.

In the book "Rakkety Tam", its like the first book that I read that 'Vermins' eat other creatures. They left messy 'scraps' (imagine: bones, guts, and blood) :omg:

I must say, your illustration on the Redwall characters look a bit serious and not just here. They have sharp eyes. ^^;

I like emotion in them as you can see with this savage look in Folgrim's eyes.

Yes, but Martin, Lady Amber, and few others look serious too.

Oh yes, very well done indeed. I always liked Folgrim when I read the book as well. Particularly how he and Chugger became really attached to eachother throughout. But I just love the bit of Folgrim chatting to the dead rat while he prepares the cooking fire.
I kinda wish those Redwall-animation studios folks would make "Legend of Luke" when they're done with Mossflower. How cool would that be?!

Whoa! That's so cool! Great job!:D

You did a very good job on Folgrim, crazy and (a little bit) creepy. And I agree with you, I *almost* feel bad for the rat. The details that you put into your work amaze me.

And the backround looks fine, it could be just a bit darker to show more depth. But it's fine as is.:D

I was trying to smudge the back a bit and add more darkness. So it's not uncommon to see the sides of my hands darkened with graphite.

Try adding a few more layers of graphite, that may help. My hands will look like that too if I ever use graphite pencils or chalk pastels:D.

Nonsense, the background looks fine. ...okay, maybe it could be a little bit better, but its better than anything *I* could come up with!

But that being said, WHOA! AWESOME! :D :D :D

Folgrim was so awesome, I just loved him - well, minus the cannibalism. Except that part was so awesomely written and unexpected, so... whoa. :D

At least he never ate woodlanders and/or beasts that didn't deserve it: from what could be gathered, Folgrim only went after vermin that attacked him (those two rats were beating on him and threatening him, and having a grand time doing it, so they really can't be pitied).

I like how you drew Folgrim, very crazy, and the blood dripping from his mouth. However, I recall he wore a cloak, and looked kind've old (from I recall Tungro described of him). But oh well, your version is plenty good. :D

And I love how you drew the dead rat, the way how his arm is just lying there limply... gruesome. :D

Way to go matey!

The cannibalism adds that insane touch. Though it was funny when he was making a fire and talking to the dead rat.

I wasn't sure about the cloak though. I was flipping through the pages of the book and found two descriptions of him. Neither mentioned a cloak. But oh well.

Oh. Well maybe I'm just thinking of the Redwal Tribes of Otters or whatever it was called. ;)

Yeah, Folgrim was a crazy one. But I just loved the scenes between him and Chugger, they were so cuuuuuuuuuuuute! :D :D :D

Yes it was. Heh, the mental image of Chug feeding Folgrim and giving him strawberries, and later the two of them crying at the thought of being separated (Folgrim crying really got to me, made me smile and wrenched my heart at the same time). And the way how Folgrim was always looking out for the little squirrel and spoiling him, ah, it was precious. And then Chugger threatening to cut off anybeast's tail if they said a word against Folgrim and Folgrim setting the little squirrelbaby on his shoulder because of that... :XD: Ahhh... :XD:

:XD: Yep, who'd thought?

One nice thing is that if Season 4 is a success, we'll probably go on with a Season 5 which will be "Legend of Luke". :D Heh, I think it'd be fun (and funny) to audition for Chugger, make my voice all high-pitched and babyish. :XD:
